Approach
In Germany are a lot of different approaches for separation, collection, and processing of household waste. Legal regulations form the basis. These different approaches lead to ignorance on the consumer side. Meanwhile, the waste society critics the separation quality and arises of the waste from the households. A compromise between these two entities forms the core ideas of the concept »keepin«.
»keepin« is a transparently designed system that responds to the individual needs of the consumer. Support in sorting and reflection on consumption is intended to strengthen people's waste awareness.
The scenario technique helped evaluate the various influences of the gained insights. The aim was to create a realistic concept as possible. We use already existing technologies and create access to available data.
Components
»keepin« is a uniform system. Localities divided into four areas. The city center is the focus of the elaboration. An icon—system on the products help to improve the waste separation at home.
waste fees-ID
An identification number for the waste disposal from the consumer tracks all relevant information for the com-pilation of the invoice and reflection of the waste quantity.
district island
The »district island« is used to dispose of collected waste. Within a radius of maximal 350m, consumers have access to an island. Built-in technologies like a scale and NFC, help to reflect the waste behavior of the consumer.
data transfer
The server manages the data. Essential nodes are head office and the consumer. Activities like route planning of the waste collection vehicles are carried out in the head office. The identification number helps to trace the data of the waste disposal back to the consumer. The measured data are visible in the application.
Datatransfer
application
The application aims to reduce the amount of produced waste by reflecting the current waste behavior and the corresponding costs with it. It allows the user to intervene in the upcoming bill. An overview over the last months and the option of displaying the average value of it can help to improve the development. The display of the separation quality of the islands creates a group dynamic which animates the consumer to separate correctly. The scan provides further support in the correct separation of products in their single parts.
